Show an Estimated Tax or Duties Notice at Shopify Checkout

Surprise import duties and taxes on delivery are one of the most frustrating parts of buying across borders. A clear, informational notice at checkout sets expectations before the shopper pays.

Show an Estimated Tax or Duties Notice at Shopify Checkout

An international customer buys a jacket from your store. The price looks fair, shipping looks reasonable, and the order goes through. A week later the courier asks for an extra payment before handing over the parcel. The customer refuses it, the package goes back, and now you are dealing with return shipping, a refund request, and a one-star review that says "hidden fees".

You did nothing wrong in a legal sense. Import duties and taxes are real, and in many cases the buyer is responsible for them. But from the shopper's point of view, nobody warned them.

A short, honest notice at checkout fixes much of this. This guide covers why surprise taxes cause abandonment and refused deliveries, what Shopify offers natively, how to write and place an informational estimate message, and the legal caution that comes with it.

Why surprise taxes and duties hurt

Cross-border shoppers worry about two kinds of surprise:

  • At checkout: the total jumps when tax is added, and the shopper abandons.
  • At delivery: duties and import taxes are collected by the carrier, and the shopper refuses the parcel.

The second is worse for you, because you have already paid for fulfillment and outbound shipping. Refused deliveries can also look like a fraud pattern when you review your orders, which muddies your data. Our guide to fraud prevention for cross-border Shopify stores covers how to tell the difference.

Either way, the root cause is the same: the shopper did not know what to expect.

What Shopify offers natively

Before adding a notice, check what Shopify can already do for your store.

  • Shopify Markets lets you configure tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive pricing per market, so shoppers in some regions see prices that already include local tax.
  • Shopify offers duties and import tax features that can calculate and collect duties at checkout, so the customer pays everything upfront. Availability depends on your plan, your store's region, your payment provider and the markets you sell to.
  • For EU shipments, collecting import VAT at checkout under IOSS can remove the surprise for eligible low-value orders. See our EU VAT and IOSS guide.

If you can collect duties and taxes at checkout, that is usually the best experience: one price, no surprises. Check your Shopify admin settings for markets, duties and taxes to see what is available to you.

If you cannot, or you choose not to, an informational notice is the next best thing.

The informational notice approach

The idea is simple: show a short message on checkout for specific destination countries that tells the shopper duties or taxes may be due, and if possible gives a rough range. The message does not change the order total, does not collect anything, and does not promise an amount.

This is a display-only customization. It sets expectations; it does not calculate tax.

What a good notice includes

  • Whether duties and taxes are included or not.
  • Who pays and when (for example, on delivery to the carrier).
  • A rough estimate or a range, only if you can provide one responsibly.
  • A link to a page with more detail.

Wording examples

SituationExample notice
Duties not collected at checkoutOrders to Canada may be subject to import duties and taxes, payable to the carrier on delivery.
Rough estimate availableEstimated import charges for Switzerland are typically a small percentage of the order value. Final amounts are set by customs.
Low-value thresholdOrders to this country under the local threshold are usually not charged duties. Higher-value orders may be.
Taxes already includedPrices include local taxes. No extra import charges on delivery.

Keep the language plain. Avoid "approximately X% guaranteed" or anything that sounds like a binding quote.

This deserves its own section.

  • Informational only: make it clear the message is an estimate, not a calculation or a guarantee.
  • Not tax advice: you are describing what customers commonly experience, not advising them on their tax obligations.
  • Keep it accurate: duty rates and thresholds change. Review notices regularly, and when in doubt, say less.
  • Do not contradict your terms: if your terms of sale state the buyer is the importer of record, your notice should be consistent with that.
  • Never claim duties are included unless they actually are.

If you are unsure how duties work for a specific market, speak to a customs broker or tax advisor before you publish a number.

Where to place the notice

LocationPurposePlan availability
Near shipping method selectionSet expectations as the shopper chooses deliveryShopify Plus
Near the order total / payment stepLast reminder before payingShopify Plus
Thank you pageConfirm what to expect at deliveryAll plans
Order status pageReminder before the parcel arrivesAll plans

On non-Plus plans, in-checkout placement is not available through checkout UI extensions, so also put the notice on your cart page, product pages for international markets, and shipping policy page. The Thank you and Order status pages still help, because they reduce refused deliveries even though the shopper has already paid.

Step-by-step setup

  1. List the countries you ship to where duties or taxes are not collected at checkout.
  2. Group them by situation: likely charges, low-value threshold, taxes included.
  3. Write one notice per group, using the plain wording patterns above.
  4. Create a help page that explains duties in more detail and link to it.
  5. Add the notice with an app or custom checkout UI extension, targeted by shipping country or market.
  6. Place test orders with addresses in each target country and confirm the right notice shows, and that domestic shoppers see nothing.
  7. Set a reminder to review the wording every quarter.

Pitfalls and edge cases

  • Targeting by billing instead of shipping country: duties depend on where the parcel goes.
  • Showing the notice to everyone: domestic shoppers do not need it and may get confused.
  • Mixing it with your shipping method names: keep cost warnings separate from the method label.
  • Gifts and B2B orders may have different rules; keep the notice general enough to cover them, or link to details.
  • Forgetting translated versions for non-English markets.

After launch, compare checkout completion and refused-delivery rates for affected countries over equal periods. The checkout funnel analytics guide explains how to look at drop-off by step.

Doing it with Blockly Checkout Customizer

Blockly Checkout Customizer, launching soon on the Shopify App Store, supports message blocks targeted by shipping country or market. You write one notice per country group, choose where it appears, and it shows only when the shipping address matches. It is display-only, so it never changes the order total. Thank you and Order status page placements work on all plans; in-checkout placements need Shopify Plus.

The takeaway

If you can collect duties and taxes at checkout, do it. If you cannot, tell the shopper what to expect, in plain language, before they pay and again before the parcel arrives. Keep the message informational, accurate and targeted to the right countries, and you will turn a common source of refused deliveries into a moment of trust.
