Stopping Image & Content Theft

Competitors lift your product photos, descriptions, and reviews to build their own listings on your dime. Learn practical defenses—hotlink protection, scrape deterrence, and watermarking—to protect your store's content.

Stopping Image & Content Theft

You invested in professional product photography, wrote descriptions that convert, and gathered hundreds of genuine reviews. Then a competitor copies all of it wholesale to sell knockoffs. Content theft is one of the most common and frustrating problems in ecommerce, and it costs you in stolen work, diluted brand, and even bandwidth you pay for while someone else profits.

You can't make your store's content impossible to copy—anything a browser can display can technically be captured. But you can make theft difficult, traceable, and unrewarding enough that most opportunists move on.

Understand the three ways content gets stolen

Defenses only make sense once you know the attack:

  • Hotlinking. A thief embeds your image directly from your URL on their own site. Your server serves the image, you pay the bandwidth, and their page displays your photo without a copy ever leaving your control.
  • Manual copying. Someone right-clicks and saves images, or highlights and copies your descriptions and reviews.
  • Automated scraping. Bots crawl your catalog and pull every image, price, and paragraph in bulk—the fastest and most damaging method.

Each needs a different countermeasure, and no single trick covers all three.

Stop hotlinking

Hotlinking is the easiest to address because it's a technical, not human, behavior. The fix is to refuse image requests that come from other domains.

  • Referer-based blocking. Configure your delivery to serve images only when the request originates from your own domain (and legitimate sources like Google Images if you want SEO traffic). Requests from a stranger's site get a blank or a placeholder.
  • Watch your bandwidth reports. A spike in image requests from an unfamiliar referrer is a live hotlinking attack.
  • Serve a "stolen content" placeholder. Some merchants return a branded "This image was stolen from ourstore.com" graphic to hotlinkers—turning theft into free advertising.

Because Shopify serves assets through its CDN, pure referer rules can be limited, which is why network-level filtering (covered below) becomes valuable for the automated side.

Deter right-click and manual copying

You cannot truly prevent copying—browser dev tools always expose the raw assets—but you can raise the effort enough to stop casual theft.

  • Disable the context menu on product images with a small script so a right-click doesn't offer "Save image as."
  • Overlay a transparent layer on images so drag-to-save grabs the empty overlay instead of the photo.
  • Disable text selection on descriptions where appropriate, though use this sparingly—it can hurt accessibility and the experience for genuine shoppers.

Set expectations honestly: these measures stop the casual copier, not the determined one. Treat them as speed bumps, and never let them degrade the experience for real customers using screen readers or keyboard navigation.

Watermark to make theft traceable

Watermarking accepts that images may be copied and makes copies useless or attributable.

  • Visible watermarks—a subtle logo in a corner—deter reuse and passively advertise your brand wherever the image travels.
  • Consistent placement across your catalog reinforces brand identity and makes stolen images instantly recognizable as yours.
  • Keep it tasteful. A watermark heavy enough to obscure the product hurts your own conversion. Aim for present-but-unobtrusive.

For lifestyle and hero images especially, a small brand mark costs almost nothing and pays off every time someone reposts your photo elsewhere.

Shut down automated scraping

Manual copying is annoying; scraping is industrial. A single bot can lift your entire catalog—photos, copy, and reviews—in minutes, then feed a competing storefront or a counterfeit marketplace listing.

Client-side tricks like disabled right-clicks do nothing against a scraper, because bots never touch a mouse. Scrapers request your URLs directly and parse the response. Stopping them requires identifying and blocking the automated traffic itself.

This is where Shieldy — Fraud Filter does the heavy lifting. Its content protection features combine with bot, VPN, proxy, and Tor blocking to stop scrapers before they can pull your images and text. When a crawler routes through a data center or anonymizing network to harvest your catalog, Shieldy identifies the pattern and blocks access—so the content never leaves your store in the first place.

Because it operates at the access level, it protects everything at once: the product photos, the descriptions you labored over, and the review content that builds trust. That's a fundamentally stronger position than any right-click script.

Put it all together

A layered content-protection setup looks like this:

  1. Hotlink protection so other sites can't serve your images on your bandwidth.
  2. Right-click and selection deterrents to stop casual manual copying—applied without hurting accessibility.
  3. Watermarks so copies stay traceable to your brand.
  4. Bot and scraper blocking to defeat the automated theft that does the most damage.

The first three raise the cost of theft; the fourth removes the most efficient theft method entirely. Together they make your store an unappealing target compared to the countless easier ones.

Content protection is included even in Shieldy's free plan, so you can start defending your catalog without spending a cent, and scale up as your store grows.

Protect what you built

Your photos, copy, and reviews are real assets—treat them like it. Layer hotlink protection, copy deterrents, watermarking, and scraper blocking, and you'll stop the vast majority of theft while keeping the experience smooth for the shoppers who matter.
