Fraud Prevention for Furniture & Home (High-Ticket)
When a single order is worth $2,000 and ships by freight, one fraudulent sale can erase a month of profit. Here is how high-ticket furniture and home stores lock down big-basket risk.

In most Shopify categories, a fraudulent order stings. In high-ticket furniture and home, it can be catastrophic. A single fraudulent sectional, dining set, or mattress can be worth $1,500 to $5,000 — and because these items ship by freight or white-glove delivery, the associated loss includes not just the product but hundreds of dollars in logistics that you will never recover.
Do the math on a store with a $2,200 average order value and a 30% gross margin. One successful fraud does not just cost you the $660 of would-be profit; it costs you the full $2,200 of cost of goods plus freight. You would need to sell three or four clean orders just to climb back to zero. That asymmetry is why high-ticket stores need a fraud posture closer to a bank's than a boutique's.
The fraud patterns that target big baskets
Fraudsters gravitate to high-AOV stores precisely because the payoff per successful attempt is large. The recurring patterns:
- Stolen-card "buy the biggest thing" runs. A fraudster testing a stolen card wants maximum value per attempt. Your $3,000 credenza is a more attractive target than a $30 candle.
- Reshipper and freight-forwarder addresses. High-value goods are routed to a forwarding warehouse, then flipped or exported before the chargeback lands.
- Address manipulation. Billing and shipping deliberately mismatched, or a shipping address changed *after* the order is placed but *before* the truck arrives.
- "Delivered damaged / never arrived" disputes. With freight, proving what happened at a loading dock is hard, and fraudsters exploit that ambiguity.
- Financing and BNPL abuse. Where you offer pay-over-time, synthetic identities take the goods on the first installment and vanish.
Rule one: every high-AOV order earns a second look
The core principle for this vertical is that order value should drive review depth. A $90 order can flow straight through. A $2,900 order should trip an automatic hold for verification. This is not paranoia — it is proportionate risk management, and your customers who are dropping thousands of dollars generally understand a quick confirmation call.
Set value thresholds that escalate scrutiny:
- Under your median AOV: standard automated screening.
- 1.5x to 3x median: require address verification (AVS) match and flag any billing/shipping mismatch.
- Above 3x median or above a hard dollar cap: mandatory manual review before fulfillment — verify the cardholder, confirm the shipping address, and check for forwarder patterns.
The key is that this happens at checkout, before the freight is booked. Once a white-glove crew is scheduled and a truck is loaded, cancellation is expensive and awkward. Shieldy — Fraud Filter works at the checkout level and can block or hold orders using an AI fraud score plus IP, country, VPN/proxy/Tor, and geolocation signals — so the risky $3,000 order gets caught before you commit a delivery crew to it.
Kill freight-forwarder fraud early
Freight forwarders and reshippers are the classic high-ticket laundering route. Two defenses:
- Screen shipping addresses against known forwarder patterns and clusters. If dozens of unrelated orders ship to the same warehouse address, that is a signal, not a coincidence.
- Watch for geo mismatches. A card issued in one country, an IP in another, and a shipping address at a domestic forwarding hub is a textbook profile. VPN or proxy use on top of that should push the score into "review" or "block" territory.
For high-value goods, consider a policy that big-ticket items only ship to verified billing-adjacent addresses, or require additional verification for any address that does not match the cardholder's region.
Delivery confirmation is your chargeback armor
Because "item not received" and "not as described" are the disputes that hit furniture stores hardest, your delivery evidence has to be airtight:
- Signature on delivery for anything above a set value — non-negotiable for freight and white-glove.
- Timestamped delivery photos of the item in place at the destination.
- Assembly / placement confirmation for white-glove: a signed sheet confirming the sofa was installed in the customer's living room is very hard to dispute.
- Carrier tracking with proof-of-delivery stored against the order.
When a fraudulent "never arrived" claim comes in on a signed, photographed, GPS-stamped delivery, you have a genuinely winnable case instead of an automatic loss.
Build the layered defense
No single control catches everything. Stack them:
- Checkout screening: AI score + IP/country/VPN/proxy/Tor blocking to stop the obvious-bad before fulfillment.
- Value-tiered review: automatic manual-review holds above your dollar thresholds.
- Address integrity: AVS matching, forwarder detection, and post-order address-change alerts.
- Delivery proof: signature and photo confirmation on every high-value shipment.
- Financing checks: extra verification on BNPL and installment orders.
Because high-ticket stores live and die on a small number of large orders, the ROI on this stack is enormous. Preventing even one $2,500 fraud a month typically pays for the entire tooling budget many times over.
Getting started without overbuilding
You can begin lean. Turn on checkout-level VPN/proxy/Tor and high-risk-geo blocking, set an AI-score hold on orders above your value threshold, and enforce signature-plus-photo delivery on freight. That combination alone closes most of the door.
Shieldy scales with you: start on the Free $0 plan to get core IP and country blocking in place, move to Enterprise at $8.99/mo for the fuller AI scoring and rule set that high-AOV stores really need, or Shopify Plus at $16.99/mo at Plus volume. See the pricing page for what each tier includes.
The bottom line
In high-ticket furniture and home, fraud is not a rounding error — it is an existential cost line. Let order value drive how hard you look, catch risky orders at checkout before the freight is booked, hunt down forwarder and geo-mismatch patterns, and make every delivery provable. Do that, and the occasional large fraud attempt becomes a caught attempt instead of a month-ending loss.
